Say YES and step into your power!
Like many of you, I am on the mailing list for numerous email newsletters. I always sign up with the greatest of intentions, not the least of which is actually reading them as a source of inspirational ideas. Unfortunately, my inbox is typically full and newsletters always get relegated to the bottom of the priority list. Lucky for me, I actually caught up on the inbox this week so when Kim Duke’s (the Sales Diva) newsletter arrived this morning, I was able to read it while I enjoyed a steaming cup of coffee.
I laughed as I read Kim’s article about a movie with Jim Carrey called YES. Although I have not seen the movie, it is apparently about a gentleman who is unable to say NO to anything. This caused Kim to hypothesize about what it would mean if you couldn’t say NO to stuff (or make up some lame excuse for why you cannot attend). How many lost opportunities would we recapture?
Last night, I was talking with a dear friend and colleage of mine who almost said NO to one of those wonderful opportunities. She had been asked to consider tackling an event promotion and then MC’ing said event. Although she will be great at it, her first instinct was to run. She is so afraid of getting up in front of a large audience and sounding like a fool (which we know she would never do), that she was willing to forgo the once in a lifetime career building opportunity to avoid the potential for public humiliation. Naturally, I talked her out of the NO and encouraged her to jump at the chance. I committed to coaching both her confidence and help her finesse her public presentation. She said YES and is now primed to step into her power!
We all have something that holds us back from owning the moment. We all face that decision to say YES or avoid. As many of you know, I am challenging myself a bit differently this year and I am publically proclaiming my objectives. I have decided to make 2010 a year of stretching my personal self imposed boundaries and saying YES more often, especially when it feels a bit uncomfortable.
This week, I signed up for a Burlesque dance class (which quite truthfully scared the living bee jeez out of me)! Being a bit conservative, the idea of sexy provocative dancing seemed like the ultimate challenge! That was until I went shopping for the shoes!
- High heels – which I never wear and
- shopping which is rarely on the top of my wish list!
But, since I am already signed up and classes start next week, I spent yesterday afternoon with Kelli at Foxy Rocks Boutique and said YES to two sexy (and funky) pairs of 3 1/2 inch heels for dancing and two ultra flashy bejewelled belts so I can doll up my jeans! Thankfully Kelli also said YES to a great price on all those fancy items.
Perhaps today will be another opportunity for YES! And hopefully my dance instructor will say YES when I ask her to teach me to actually walk in those heels (and look graceful but that might be too much to ask)
So if I can do that – what are you willing to risk by saying YES?
